Black & white or Colour?

When I first started shooting I was literally 15 years old! (well technically 10 but not with a 35mm single reflex camera). I was given a 35mm film camera a Canon AE1 to be exact for a dear friend. I basically photographed anything I could find of interest. Anything from perfume bottles & flowers, to magazine covers & of course that led to photographing my friends. I learned quite quickly how to manipulate the internal light meter and capture amazing close-ups and candid yet intense and bold portraits of all the people in my life. I started with colour actually, 200 – 800 ISO film of many brands. I was highly experimental, & as long as I was shooting that’s all that mattered. I quickly made my close friends my models and muses, and they seemed to love being there in front of my camera as they trusted me and my abilities. I started to use black and white film in my alternative school, and they made me the official school photographer. I learned to use a darkroom to develop my black & white prints, which became an addiction. I loved to see the images slowly appear and take shape in front of my eyes on the paper. In any case, I feel there is no comparison between the two. Art does not discriminate, if will always show itself with what ever medium you decide to use. I would say give both a try, and keep shooting!
