Working with existing is light from the sun, moon, or sky. I am sure you have all seen fashion images that are back lit and thought they were amazing. However this takes experience with the fundamentals of working with existing light. When working with a subject try to place them beside the existing light, for example a window. Try not to shoot someone with existing light behind them, as it results in lens flare as the cameras meter is reading the back light. You can also face the subject even more towards the light source (window, sun, or moon). Imagine the sun or window is an actual photography light, really look at how the light is hitting your subject, and make sure it’s the effect you want. Keep in mind top lighting is also not always a very flattering light. IF your light source is coming directly from the top, example the sun at high noon it can cause very dark shadows under the eyes, nose, and mouth. Try to shoot either early morning sun rise or sun set, if you cannot take your subject in the shade! If they are properly metered, you will get a great result!
